This research project–which Covid-19 has temporarily put on hold–is about a fascinating turn-of-the-century homeopathic doctor and amateur painter who wrote a memoir about a bike ride from Chicago to San Francisco in 1907. Her second husband was a British Royal Engineer in India and later designed a portion of the Electrical Building at the 1893 World’s Fair. The image below is an invention that he patented and hoped to make a fortune selling. Her story–and that of her extended family–stretches from British India to southern California and traces American history from the Civil War through the San Francisco earthquake to the trenches of World War II.
