Heather S. Cole (that’s me!) is a writer, editor, publisher, archivist and public historian living in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. By day, I am editor and media relations director at Bridgewater College in Bridgewater, Va. I also take on a variety of freelance and consulting projects, including the following:
History Talks: I am available for book signings and to give talks at libraries, historical societies, schools and other organizations. Click here for descriptions of my current talks. Beginning in 2026, my speaking fee is $200 (plus mileage if travel beyond 60 miles is required). If that exceeds your budget, let’s talk — we can probably work something out.
Biz of Books Talks: I am available to give talks and organize panel discussions for writing groups, libraries, college classes or other organizations on the business side of writing and publishing books. My current talks can be customized to the interests of your organization or group. Contact me to discuss.
Freelance Writing: I research and write features, profiles, organizational histories and travel articles for magazines, newsletters, websites and marketing pieces. I am fluent in Chicago and AP styles, do not use generative AI and my rate is $0.40-$0.70 per word.
Editing Services: I do fact-checking, copyediting and proofreading of long-form and book-length non-fiction projects including history, memoir, academic and science writing. I am fluent in Chicago and AP styles, do not use generative AI and base my rates on those recommended by the Editorial Freelancers Association. Reach out directly or find me on Fiverr.
